Embracing Innovation and Heritage: Our Summer Journey at HUST

Our experience at the AI Robot Summer School at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Wuhan was truly transformative, filled with enriching academic insights, practical innovation, and cultural exploration.

During our stay at HUST, we participated in eleven thought-provoking lectures covering topics such as swarm intelligence, humanoid robots, the integration of structural robots in car manufacturing, and the exploration of robots' degrees of freedom. Each session deepened our appreciation for artificial intelligence and robotics, opening our eyes to possibilities that we had never considered before. The lecturers' expertise and passion greatly inspired us, pushing us to engage more actively and inquisitively in class.

One of the highlights of this summer school was the practical innovation lessons, particularly working hands-on with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). Controlling LED traffic lights through PLC programming not only reinforced theoretical concepts but also challenged us creatively. It was exciting to experiment with increasingly complex tasks, allowing us to experience firsthand the tangible impact of innovative programming. Visiting various laboratories and enterprises further expanded our understanding of AI's real-world applications, especially when experts introduced us to their groundbreaking innovations in medicine and automotive manufacturing.

Beyond academics, the summer school beautifully integrated cultural exploration into our experience. Activities such as DIY classes on making traditional Chinese fans, practicing calligraphy, participating in tea ceremonies, engaging with Jing Chu culture unique to Hubei, and learning the delicate art of Chinese paper cutting deeply resonated with us. These experiences allowed us to reconnect profoundly with our Chinese heritage. Our visit to the Hubei Provincial Museum provided further cultural immersion, enriching our appreciation of China's rich history and traditions.

This was a memorable experience for each member of our group. We had members who were visiting China for the first time and others who had visited multiple times before, yet each of us gained a unique understanding of this summer school journey. It all began with a five-hour flight from Malaysia, where we met our friends at the airport, forming the initial "HUST Summer School Alumni" team. Throughout the check-in process, our friend group expanded as we met new companions. The friendliness of the Chinese volunteers amazed us, guiding us meticulously through every step, including settling hot water and electricity bills, identifying important locations, and recommending local delicacies. Our international friends were equally impressive, always ready to lend a helping hand whenever we struggled with directions or unlocking scooters.

Our after-school hours were spent exploring the nearby mall and relishing local cuisine. The interactive cultural lessons became precious memories, as we kept our calligraphy, fans, and paper cuttings as mementos of our enriching summer school experience. These classes stirred nostalgic memories of our primary school days when we first encountered the beauty of Chinese culture. Moreover, the university campus architecture evoked feelings reminiscent of youthful aspirations we had previously only witnessed in Chinese dramas. The unique camaraderie built with the Chinese volunteers went beyond scheduled activities; we shared joyful moments playing badminton and attending social gatherings.

Exploring Wuhan outside campus was equally impactful. Visiting iconic sites like the Yellow Crane Tower (Huang He Lou), Dong Hu Lake, Hu Bu Xiang, and Jiang Han Road offered breathtaking views and moments of deep reflection. Experiencing Wuhan's summer heat firsthand was intriguing, even for us coming from a tropical climate. Blending into local culture by riding scooters and enjoying street life gave us a deeper connection to the city.

Our journey wasn't always easy, but the friendships we forged among fellow students, volunteers, staff, professors, and locals made every moment worthwhile. This summer school experience will forever hold a special place in our hearts, providing enhanced knowledge, enriched cultural awareness, and countless cherished memories.
