From January 14 to 24, Associate Professor Franz Bamer from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, visited our school to conduct a two-week teaching and academic exchange program under the framework of the HUST–RWTH Aachen Engineering Education Innovation Center. As a core partner in Huazhong University of Science and Technology’s “One-to-Ten” international cooperation strategy, RWTH Aachen University plays a key role in advancing global collaboration. This visit aimed to further implement the consensus on deepening cooperation between the two universities by introducing high-quality German engineering education resources, thereby enhancing the internationalization of talent cultivation and supporting the training of top innovative talents.

The overseas premium course, “Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Structural Mechanics,” comprised a total of 32 class hours and was hosted by Associate Professor Cui Yan. At the opening ceremony, Vice Dean Xu Jianfeng delivered a welcome address, warmly greeting Associate Professor Bamer and encouraging students to cherish this valuable international learning opportunity, broaden their academic horizons, and actively explore the frontiers of interdisciplinary research. The course attracted more than 100 undergraduate and graduate students from the Schools of Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, among others. Associate Professor Bamer systematically introduced the applications of deep neural networks and physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) in nonlinear structural mechanics. The classes featured lively interactions and achieved excellent teaching outcomes.

During the visit, Associate Professor Bamer was also invited to deliver an academic lecture at the 88th Mechanical Engineering Young STAR Academic Forum of our school. He presented a keynote talk entitled “From Nanostructure to Infrastructure.” Following the lecture, Chair of our schoolZhang Fen presented Associate Professor Bamer with a certificate of honor and spoke highly of the significance of this event in fostering a high-level international academic atmosphere. This series of academic exchanges not only built a bridge for faculty and students to engage with leading international scholars, but also injected new momentum into the deepened Sino-German collaboration in the interdisciplinary fields of intelligent manufacturing and mechanics.
