When I first stepped off the plane in China, I was filled with a mix of excitement and curiosity. Coming from RWTH Aachen University in Germany with a background in Computer Science, I knew this summer school would offer a fresh perspective—both academically and culturally. But I didn’t expect it to be this unforgettable.
Academic Growth at HUST
At HUST, the academic portion of the program exceeded my expectations. The lectures on topics like autonomous driving, swarm intelligence, and robotics applications in China were not only cutting-edge but also highly engaging. The professors encouraged us to think critically and explore beyond the lecture slides.
I particularly appreciated the hands-on components—designing robotic simulations and participating in group projects that challenged my technical abilities. As someone from a computer science background, it was fascinating to see how AI and robotics intersect with real-world industrial use cases in China. These academic experiences have genuinely enriched my perspective and given me skills that I will carry forward in my career.

Fascinating culture
Outside the classroom, every day brought something new. I found myself stepping out of my comfort zone—trying food I’d never imagined I’d eat (yes, even chicken feet!), singing my heart out at a local KTV, and learning about fan painting and Chinese calligraphy. The cultural activities gave depth to my understanding of Chinese society, and I now see just how deeply traditions and values are woven into everyday life here.
A City That Never Stops Surprising
Wuhan itself was full of surprises. From peaceful moments cycling around East Lake to the buzz of exploring the Yellow Crane Tower, I felt both a tourist and a local. I also formed strong connections with fellow students and volunteers—whether we were discussing AI late into the night, playing ping-pong, or bonding over all sorts of tea.
Final Thoughts
My time in China has been transformative. It was more than just a summer school; it was a deep dive into a new culture, an academic challenge, and a personal journey. I came here with a desire to learn, and I’m leaving with new knowledge, friendships that span the globe, and memories that will stay with me forever.

Thank you, HUST and the Chinese Scholarship Council, for making this incredible experience possible.
